What i understood about hiring

hiring

I was a Native Android developer before, and it won’t be a lie to say I applied to more than 500 jobs over 2–3 years. From all those applications I only got one job and had just two interviews. I often hear people say they get rejected without even reaching the interview phase. Let’s look at this from a different perspective.

When a company posts a job, it reaches thousands of people — and at least half of them might apply. Sometimes people apply for fun. HR has to filter applications quickly; they often spend 5–10 seconds looking at a resume. That’s well known, so let’s talk about something else.

Companies try to hire people who fit their culture. You can have 5+ years of experience and great projects, but good companies have their own culture and values. When hiring, they need to make sure you’ll fit that culture and share those values. In the past I rarely researched the companies I applied to, and now I realize how bad that was. The best companies look for candidates who support the company’s mission — culture fit matters.

One more thing to think about also: if a company could hire anyone from around the world, why wouldn’t they hire the best person? When you get rejected, you’re competing with thousands of applicants (for international roles). Companies take time to review candidates and choose the best fits. Brian Chesky, Airbnb’s CEO, hired their early engineers only after months of searching — that shows how high the bar can be. Chesky has said a great leader hires the right people and empowers them; if founders aren’t careful, a company can fail. That is probably why they might take this long…
